Handbook for a summer car trip in Europe with your dogs!

Travel with your dogs

Taking your dogs with you on holiday is certainly a priority, but we must pay attention to his needs in order to guarantee him a pleasant and safe journey. First advice: if you are a serial traveller, it is very important to start getting your puppy used to long journeys right away!

Europe and dogs: the rules.

You need to find out about the vaccinations required by the member states of the European Union and be up to date.

The movement of pets from Italy to other countries of the European Union provides for the following conditions:

  • passport issued by the official veterinary service, certifying the execution of the valid anti-rabies vaccination;
  • microchip;
  • treatment for echinococcus if traveling to Finland, carried out maximum 30 days before arrival in the country;
  • there’s a special case for puppies under 3 months without anti-rabies. It is necessary to contact the Consular Office of the member country to which you wish to bring the animal. The passport is still mandatory.

Once the paperwork has been completed, we can start packing the suitcase for our four-legged friends!

What is necessary.

First, we must not forget a special seat belt or a carrier placed on the back seat of the car. It could be open on several sides, so our little friend can look around. It should be based on the size of our dog, lined with a comfortable seat cover.

The documents:

  • the certificate of registration in the canine registry
  • the health booklet
  • for those traveling outside Italy, the passport.

Food: croquettes, tooth cleaning sticks, reward biscuits, placed in special airtight containers. Two bowls, one for food and one for water, to always keep close at hand for any stops during the journey. Prefer those in foldable rubber or silicone, very useful to be placed even in a bag or backpack.

It’s important to have a collar equipped with a tag engraved with the owner’s name and telephone number, leash or harness, depending on habits. It’s always best to carry a spare leash or two leashes of different sizes.

He will appreciate his favorite toys such as the puppets from which he never separates, which will keep him company during the trip or at bedtime!

A useful tool is his kennel or for example a special foldable pillow, a blanket, a raincoat and a towel to dry him in case of rain.

We must not forget about the beauty routine! Hygiene bags and grooming products are essential: carder, shampoo, disinfected wipes for cleaning ears and eyes.

During the trip, pay attention to the air conditioning that could be dangerous for our dogs!

Right now you are ready to leave with your pet!
